LRIW President, Araceli Martinez opened the meeting by introducing the LRIW officers and directors, and reviewed the agenda for the day. This year the luncheon featured two guest speakers:
Markus Downey, an Applications Engineer with Emitec, Inc. Mr. Downey discussed his role for being in charge of large engine and locomotive applications (Oxidation Catalyst, Particulate Reduction and Selective Catalytic Reduction).
Christopher P.L. Barkan is Professor, Director of the Railroad Engineering Program, and George Krambles Faculty Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Barkan teaches courses in railroad transportation engineering, railway signaling and operation, and advances in rail technology.
Heather Ryterski, Progressive Railroading Magazine, presented Cathryn Frankenberg with the "Woman of the Year" award for her exceptional transition arrangements involving numerous people, two railroads, and one labor union for moving work and people from Sioux Falls to Minneapolis and other locations.
