“Maintenance Planning in Economically Challenging Times”
Presented by: Sharon Harmsworth, Vice President, TTX Company.


Ms. Harmsworth gave the attendees an impressive talk on how to reduce costs using new technological solutions. Technical details were provided and the audience found it easy to grasp the methods outlined for reducing maintenance costs while optimizing quality, such as:

• Use of data mining to determine what components have the most value from a Life Cycle Cost perspective

• Maintenance planning and scheduling as a result of component life comprehension

• Evaluation of detector technology as an enabler for migrating to a Reliability Centered Maintenance approach (similar practice used in the commercial airline industry)

• Continued awareness of technological advancements and evaluation of their application in reducing maintenance expenses

The LRIW's Luncheon was honored by the presence of Mr. Tom Stahura, Executive Director of the Association of American Railroads, representatives from the railroads including Mr. Scott Moore, Vice President Public Affairs, Union Pacific Railroad and Todd Havens, President, Western Rail Inc. Progressive Railroading Magazine showed their support with the participation of Mr. Pat Foran, Editor.

Closing Remarks by President, Araceli Martinez

Ms. Martinez summarized the luncheon highlights and messages. She sent an enthusiastic message for progressive goals among the LRIW members and graciously thanked the presenters, award recipients, and the attendees for being there. In closing, her encouraging words were:

“We have come so far, and yet have so much distance to go. This organization is fueled by women of courage, vision, and strong work ethic, and this train is rolling. Climb aboard, ladies. Let’s do it!”
